QSR Sales, Traffic, Average Price and QPT Trends Overview

Net Sales

QSR Net Sales Trends August 2026

QSR net sales fell -0.6% YOY in August 2026, ending seven straight months of growth that ran from January to July. The decline wasn’t driven by operators cutting prices; menu prices actually grew during the month. Instead, it was a volume story: guests are managing both how often they visit and how much they spend when they do show up. That pullback outweighed the price gains, dragging net sales negative even as menu prices rose. It lines up with Revenue Management Solutions’ (RMS) Q2 2026 consumer report finding that 33% of Americans report spending less at restaurants than a year ago.

Traffic

August 2026 QSR traffic trends, down 3.5% year over year

QSR traffic declined -3.5% YOY in August, the steepest decline since late 2025. This tracks with what RMS’ consumer research found: of those that reported spending less, 56% say they are visiting restaurants less often, more than any other cutback behavior. The decline also coincided with a difficult backdrop for the category. Early in the month, back-to-back foodborne illness outbreaks drew significant press attention, with several major chains pulling affected ingredients from locations amid the investigations. At the same time, gas prices remained elevated above $4 per gallon for much of August, and consumer confidence fell to its lowest level in seven months. Together, these pressures likely compounded the pullback in visits captured in RMS’ data.

Average Price

August 2026 QSR Average Price trends

Average price for QSRs increased +2.6% in August, an increase from last month’s 2.3%. Average check rose only 2.4% YOY, meaning price growth has now outpaced check growth. That gap signals a shift in guest behavior but doesn’t tell the whole story. The QPTs section below confirms what’s actually happening.

Items per Transaction (QPTs)

August 2026 QSR Average QPTs Trends

This month we are adding a new metric to the series: items per transaction (QPTs), or how many items the average guest puts in the basket per visit.

Why look at QPTs? A gap between price growth and check growth, like the one above, can mean two different things: guests are either ordering fewer items or ordering the same number of items, but trading down to more affordable options. Average check alone can not tell those apart. QPTs can, because it counts items regardless of their cost.

QSR QPTs fell -0.4% YOY in August. This confirms that there is a drop in basket size, not guests trading down to cheaper items while ordering the same amount. For operators, that puts check builders front and center. The fix starts with getting guests to add the drink, the side or the second item.

Snacking Scenarios: Revenue Beyond Lunch & Dinner

Lunch and dinner are locked in, but breakfast, snacks and late night sit wide open, with as many as 53% of guests buying nothing at all during those hours. As RMS’ latest consumer report explains, the barrier isn’t appetite; 40% say snacking out costs too much. Despite price concerns, guests prefer quick-service over any other restaurant type for morning and afternoon snacks, presenting operators with an opportunity.
