Gen Z is reshaping restaurant behavior, trading delivery for dine-in, quick service for experience and price sensitivity for perceived value.

While many demographics are tightening their wallets, Gen Z is proving to be an outlier. According to Revenue Management Solutions’ (RMS) latest consumer report, this generation isn’t just dining out,  they’re defining the future of restaurant traffic and spend.

More than half of Gen Z respondents (56%) qualify as “frequent users,” visiting restaurants 5+ times per week. Nearly half report spending more of their disposable income on restaurants compared to last year, versus a majority of Gen X who say they are spending less.

But the real story isn’t just that Gen Z eats out a lot. It’s how their thoughts about value, convenience and experience diverge from the broader population and how those shifts should reshape restaurant strategies going forward.

How Gen Z Is Redefining Restaurant Behavior

Our new RMS survey insights, combined with our Q2 Deep Dive into Gen Z, uncovered key dining behavior shifts that every restaurant operator should know.

Drive-Thru Still Dominates, but Channels Could Shift

More than 75% of respondents report using dine-in at least once a week, while 90% of Gen Z also use the drive-thru weekly.

While 69% of Gen Z still uses delivery at least once a week, forward-looking data shows that delivery intent continues to slip, with nearly half planning to cut back.

Dinner Takes Center Stage

When asked which daypart they dine out for most often, 55% of Gen Z said dinner, outpacing lunch and other occasions.

Gen Z Restaurant Dining Preferences

Fast Casual and Casual Dining Are on the Rise

While a quarter of Gen Z and Millennials reported increasing their quick-service restaurant visits, their future intent points toward fast casual and casual dining.

Why? Experience and quality are overtaking speed and convenience. Ambiance, menu design and ingredient transparency all matter more to this generation.

Less Focus on Price, More on Value

Three in four respondents overall say restaurant prices are higher month-over-month, but just 63% of Gen Z agree. Gen Z is price-aware but not price-driven. They are more willing to pay for experiences when the perceived value aligns with their expectations — whether that means freshness, sustainability, convenience or brand ethos.

What This Means for Restaurant Operators

Gen Z’s influence extends well beyond frequency and spend. Their shifting expectations are redefining what “value” means — balancing speed, quality, and experience in new ways.

Yes, they’re driving restaurant traffic today. But more importantly, they’re signaling what the industry will look like tomorrow — less delivery-heavy, more experience-driven and less about chasing the lowest price than delivering value.

Brands that read these signals early and adapt accordingly will be best positioned to capture Gen Z’s loyalty today and the broader consumer momentum they’re driving tomorrow.
